Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a small perennial shrub native to the Mediterranean, traditionally associated with love, death and remembrance. It was incorporated into Medieval weddings to help couples remember their vows, used by ancient Egyptians in burial rituals, and trusted by Roman students to boost memory before examinations. Medicinally, Greek healers used rosemary to promote liver, circulatory and digestive health. Chinese culture believed it was helpful for headaches and hair growth. Today, rosemary is recognized for its natural antioxidant properties, working to combat damaging free radical molecules in the body. Studies suggest that rosemary may prevent cancer cells from binding to DNA and stimulate liver detoxification of carcinogens¹. Rosmarinic acid is also known to increase production of prostaglandin E2 and reduce production of leukotriene B4 in human white blood cells. This makes it a potential anti-inflammatory agent.
