As an essential cofactor of glutathione peroxidase, which is thought to protect the body from cancer, selenium is an important antioxidant. It is also involved with iodine metabolism, pancreatic function, DNA repair, immunity, and the detoxification of heavy metals. Selenium is vital for healthy immune functioning, and in selenium-deficient populations, selenium supplementation has been found to reduce the incidence of viral hepatitis. This is presumably due to enhanced immune function. It is also involved with iodine metabolism, pancreatic function, DNA repair, and the detoxification of heavy metals. Plus, selenium is needed to activate thyroid hormones. Selenium has also been shown to decrease sensitivity to potential allergens. In a major multi-center, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled clinical study that was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), participants treated with 200 mcg of selenomethionine reduced their incidence of prostate cancer by 63%. Meanwhile, this same study also indicated that overall cancer mortality for the selenomethionine group was reduced by 50% compared to placebo.
