Lutein (pronounced LOO-teen) is a carotenoid (natural pigment) found in green leafy vegetables, corn and eggs. It functions as an antioxidant, protecting healthy cells from damage caused by free radicals, while also filtering out potentially-dangerous, high-energy blue light from the visible light spectrum. These properties are believed to protect plant cells from oxidative stress and sunlight. Studies suggest lutein may provide similar benefits to humans, guarding, in particular, eye, skin and heart health. After ingestion, lutein is deposited in the eyes, specifically in the macula and the lens. The macula, located in the center of the retina, is responsible for producing the sharp, central vision needed to see fine detail (for reading, sewing, etc.). Research has shown that higher lutein levels are associated with macular health. Lutein may also play a part in skin health, by absorbing longer-wavelength blue light.
