May also help provide joint and mood benefits.Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble B vitamin important for carbohydrate metabolism and energy production. This nutrient plays a part in neurological activity, including DNA replication, and aids in the production of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe), which may have benefits for joints and healthy mood. Vitamin B12 is necessary for the formation of red blood cells, which are linked to energy levels, with deficiencies being associated with fatigue. As this nutrient is vital for carbohydrate metabolism and energy production, vitamin B12 is a welcome addition to any weight loss or maintenance program. Normal nerve cell activity and tissue formation are supported by vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is the only form of B12 that can be used by the central nervous system. The liver is unable to sufficiently transform cobalamin, the common B12 form, into the superior methylcobalamin form, which makes supplementation necessary. Studies suggest vitamin B12 may also provide support for the cardiovascular system. Together with vitamin B6 and folic acid, B12 helps maintain healthy levels of homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood.
