L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid-meaning the body does not create it on
its own; it must be achieved through diet. It's found in small amounts in nuts,
grains, beans, legumes, cheese, eggs, and meat.
L-tryptophan breaks down into four different metabolites in the body. Most
notably, it's converted to 5-HTP, which is then converted to serotonin-a
neurotransmitter that assists regulate mood, sleep and appetite. Low serotonin
levels in the brain are associated with poor mental health and sleep
disturbances. Supplementing with L-tryptophan may help raise serotonin levels,
enhancing better mood, relaxation and rest.
In addition, L-tryptophan is broken down into melatonin, a hormone that
regulates the body's sleep-wake cycle, and the B-vitamin, niacin, which helps
supports healthy function of the nervous system, digestive system and skin.
L-tryptophan also plays a vital part in the production of compounds called
kynurenines, which have been found to suppress immune response, an effect that
may benefit those with overactive immune function.
