How Does NSI® Vegetarian Red Yeast Rice work? Red yeast rice is the fermentation by-product formed when yeast (Monascus purpureus) is cultivated on cooked, non-glutinous rice. Besides being a dietary staple in some Asian countries, red yeast rice was first used for health-promoting properties in China during the Tang Dynasty in 800 A.D. It was recommended for circulatory and digestive health benefits. Today, red yeast rice is recognized for its ability to promote healthy cholesterol levels. Red yeast rice contains fiber, rice starch, phytosterols, isoflavones and fatty acids, as well as compounds known collectively as monacolins, which provide natural benefits for cholesterol health. Monacolins possess hydroxymethyglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase-inhibitory properties. This means they may inhibit the normal synthesis of cholesterol in the body by binding to the cholesterol-production enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Research indicates that besides effectively restricting production of cholesterol in the liver, red yeast rice may support healthy cholesterol levels naturally by promoting the production of HDL ("good") cholesterol¹, while inhibiting the production of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglcerides². Red yeast rice is also known to have natural antioxidant properties, meaning it helps defend healthy cells from damage caused by unstable free radicals. In one study conducted by the UCLA School of Medicine, 83 individuals with high cholesterol levels were given red yeast rice for 12 weeks³. It was found that those supplementing with red yeast rice experienced a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to those receiving placebo.
