How Does NSI® Vitex Agnus-Castus work? Vitex (vitex agnus-castus), also known chaste tree, monk's pepper tree and chasteberry, is a plant native to Mediterranean countries and central Asia. Since the time of Hippocrates, vitex has been used for women's issues, from enhancing fertility to improving the menstrual cycle to assisting with childbirth. Vitex was also believed to suppress libido, as the species name Agnus castus originates from the Latin "casitas," or chastity. The main active compounds in vitex, including flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, and terpenoids, are found in its dried, ripe berries. The benefits of vitex may result from its actions on the pituitary gland, specifically on the production of the lutenizing hormone (LH). By indirectly increasing progesterone production, it may help regulate the menstrual cycle. Studies indicate that vitex may help restore a normal estrogen-to-progesterone balance. Vitex is also believed to keep prolactin secretion in check. Its ability to decrease mildly elevated prolactin levels may benefit healthy ovulation as well as relieve premenstrual breast tenderness. Vitex has also been reported to help with a variety of discomforts associated with the cessation of the menstrual cycle. Research indicates that vitex should be taken continuously for several months for best results. I am stronger believer that body should work according to natural cycle instead of force by medicine, but not in case of vitex because it natural clomid, an herbalist suggest me vitex along with other herbal blends like wild yam, chaste tree, I am currently using it and so far it has kept my periods regular for 2mo now.
