How Does NSI® Strontium work? Strontium is a mineral naturally present in food, water and in trace amounts in bones and teeth. It's chemically similar to calcium and is metabolized in the body in a nearly identical way. In vitro (test tube), animal and human studies have all shown strontium may increase bone formation and decrease bone resorption (or breakdown), thereby resulting in significant increases in bone mineral density (BMD). In one clinical trial, a group of postmenopausal women were given strontium for a period of two years. It was found that those taking one gram of strontium per day experienced increases in BMD of the hip, thigh and lumbar spine compared to women taking placebo¹. Another study showed that among 353 postmenopausal women with poor bone health who had experienced at least one spinal fracture, those who took two grams of strontium daily showed a significantly greater increase in lumbar spine BMD than those taking placebo². Blood levels of alkaline phosphatase, a marker of bone formation, were found to have increased, while marker of bone breakdown decreased. Naturally-occurring strontium is non-toxic and should not be confused with the radioactive isotope strontium-90. Strontium supplements should not be taken at the same as calcium to improve its absorption. NSI® Strontium is both kosher and vegetarian.
